Harry Walker R.I.P.
My name is Barry Walker and I live in New Zealand. My late father, Harry Walker, was a teacher at Mayfield in the years just prior to the Second World War and so my brother and I were delighted to find him in the ‘1937 Panorama’ photo.
In the above enlargement from the Panorama my father is second from the right in the middle row. He was involved in evacuating Ilford school children to Ipswich at the beginning of the war but was later recalled to Ilford where he taught at a number of schools. After the war he was at the Dane School. He died prematurely in 1951 just before his 40th birthday. At the time he was on the staff of Redbridge Primary School. During his teaching career he was heavily involved in the activities of the National Union of Teachers and also found time to write, in conjunction with a colleague Mr Morgan, a series of arithmetic textbooks entitled ‘Visual Self Help Arithmetic’.
I am the second son of Harry Walker. As well as the 4 Visual Self Help Arithmetic books he also produced a cricket scorebook which was published by Spaldings.
Thank you for the information regarding Harry Walker. I do remember him, I was one of the Boys he sent to Ipswich on September the 1st. 1939. We were very well looked after and visited the hosts many times. We were very happy (we three brothers) due to your fathers care and interest. Regards – Derrick Mumford, Queensland Australia.
Derrick,
Thank you for your kind comments. Barry.
