1963 John Burchell
I left Mayfield in 1963 and became a trainee technician with the Telephone Department of the GPO. I resigned in 1969 and took a job with a company maintaining amusement machines and one arm bandits. The method in my madness was soon rewarded. I was sent to look after twelve one arm bandits on the SS Southern Cross, and sailed around the world three times on her. On the first trip I met a lovely Australian girl, Dianne. On the last trip we married and I brought her home to meet mum and dad. Continue reading →

A few of my memories from Mayfield and beyond.
Mr. Rew (PT). On one occasion he took us for a snowball fight a field, just up the road from the school. There was a tower in the background that had a clock that struck the hour.
Mr Sanders (Metalwork). Very strict.
Mr Summers (English). He refused to correct my spelling as I kept spelling some words in different ways.
Mr Beaumont (Science). He dropped a Kipps glass instrument on the stairs and tried to blame the boy next to him who wouldn’t have it. Continue reading →
1963 Peter (Spike) Wademan
Born in 1946 Peter Wademan attended Mayfield between 1960 and 1963. In his teens, Peter was a member of the Air Cadets where he developed model making skills and an aptitude for drawing aircraft. His interest in aircraft and flying was nurtured by his father, who flew Spitfires in the war, taking him to air displays around London. Continue reading →
