I attended Mayfield from 1961 to 1964 before leaving for a school in Chingford. I remember Mr. Summers to this day for two reasons. The first was the praise he gave me for an essay when I was a second year pupil. The second concerns a fellow pupil, Richard Pope, who arrived at school wearing a black ‘Beatle’ jacket with silver buttons. Continue reading →

It feels like yesterday, going to Mayfield in Goodmayes, it is only when I try and move I realise it is now over 50 years ago that I left! Looking back I feel the teachers at the school did their utmost to get the best out of us pupils and I’m sure many of us did far better than we would have in any other of the local schools. The classes I was in were… 1B2, 2B2, 3X4, 4E3 and 5E3

My last two years at Mayfield I was in Harry Braham’s class. I hated all sports and was not much good at art. Belonging to the Radio Club, held in the Art block, was my means of survival. In 1973 I did actually get my Amateur Radio License (G4MJW) and some years later (1991) spoke to Harry Braham on the air from his QTH at Frinton-on-Sea. I never kept in contact with anyone after leaving Mayfield on the 29th May 1964, but used to see David Baskerville from time to time in his shop.

Richard Furlong (1950-2003) – For many years I went fishing on the Norfolk Broads with Richard who was in my year at Mayfield. Sadly he died from cancer three years ago. I was in contact with him until his death.

I Would be grateful if Roy Tyzack would place me on the mailing list for the reunion in 2014. Technically I do not qualify as I was two years behind his year group. I lived around the corner from Dave Baskerville and went to the same church and youth club as him and his two brothers for many years. We wasted many Friday and Saturday evening of our youth playing table tennis and billiards in a wooden hut in Chadwell Heath. I was in Glyn Summers form and was taught English by him for four years. Partly as a result of his example I spent all of my working life as a secondary school teacher, initially in Dagenham and subsequently on the South Coast. I cant make up my mind if I should buy him a pint or punch him on the nose!

Radio Man: For those of a certain age the all too brief period of Pirate Radio represents the Golden Age of Music Radio. A cultural sea change had been unfolding since the beginning of the 60’s and Pirate Radio accelerated this momentum for those that were young at that time. We were blessed with many stations in the south east of England, Caroline the most well known, Radio London (Big L) the station of choice. Continue reading →
