The Boys School Staff List has been updated. Please leave a reply to update this page or correct any errors.
What ever happened to Mr Ashmore?. The PE teacher who used to inspect all the boys to make sure they weren’t wearing underpants underneath their football shorts. Apart from my reminisces please add me to your 1974 list.
There was another Mr Johnson, a Canadian, around the mid to late 1950’s. I think he taught just general subjects.
Hi Tony, I noted your wording…
“Please leave a reply to update this page or correct any errors”
I’d like to make some corrections/additions regarding Mr.Toms. His entry is currently fairly vague… as in – 19** to 197*. He was most certainly at the school already, when I started in Sept’ 1972. I was there from Sept’ 1972 thru to June/July 1977 (Goodmayes Lane). In all that time I don’t ever recall him being a Maths teacher at all. He may well have been before my arrival, but not whilst there. Mr Fielding was our regular and very imposing Maths teacher.
What I do know for 100% certain is, regarding Mr.Toms, he both ran and held the post for “Computer Studies”, usually double-lessons. That’s ‘official’ as it was a part of our curriculum.
They were always held upstairs, his classroom facing the West-playground.
Calm, tall & with his low-tone voice, he was always advocating computers. Back then, during class, we all used Pink/White Binary Punch cards (seems ancient, so archaic now). He even took us (whole class), down to Ilford Town Hall (their I.B.M room). Back then the computers were as large as a van, the trip took some arranging. Mr Toms was there for the whole time I was there,’72-’77, so you can fill-in the latter, although I can’t help with prior to ’72. Lastly, you may be interested with this. When Mr Birchinall left as Headmaster & Mr Pusey took over, 1975 from memory, Mr Toms took over as ‘Deputy Headmaster’, when Mr Pusey was away.
I have a photograph taken in Aug’ 1973, of Mr Toms & I in a cable-car. The cable-car was at Rudesheim on the River Rhine, above a vineyard (East Bank). Each was a two-man car & we were ‘buzzed’ by a USAF F.4 Phantom jet (Spangdahlem) quite alarming as we were almost 1/2-way across, but also rather exciting. With irony, I later saw this same cable-car in the Elvis Presley film “G.I.Blues” (filmed during the early 1960’s I believe & IIRC, the cable-cars were still the same) I haven’t scanned the old B&W ‘127’ yet, but when I do, where should I post it? (Email it to – contact@mayfieldmemories.me.uk – Tony Gocke)
I hope you find the info’ on Mr Toms helpful (it’s accurate) & hope it plugs a gap.
In response to K Hudson’s remarks. Mr toms taught me maths both in year 1 and in year 5 for GCE. I attended a few times his computer club. There were no computer lessons in my days it was extra curricula.
Remember Mr Carrick very well and had him to thank for my interest in mathematics. Made the lesson enjoyable yet informative. He introduced me to trigonometry, which before he introduced it to me, was told to me was something I should fear. Met him on the tube after he left, when our class visited London including the Royal college of surgeons, and got his autograph which I remember had a mathematical problem attached.
After all these years I have realised who the actor who plays Hercule Poirot has reminded me of, Mr C. E. V. Ivey, my maths teacher in the early 70s. Great old fashioned, stuffy and strict teacher with stature and authority and respect from his pupils. Also a bit like Captain Mainwaring in character.
Anyone remember Geoff Elliott? British Empire and Commonwealth Games pole vault champion for 1954 and 1958. He was a temporary sports master at Mayfield arround 1953-1954 when I was there.
Would like to contact anyone who left in 1961 from the boys school. who remembers me.
Mr Campion was a maths and p.e teacher, he was my 1st year form teacher, 1965
Is this the same ‘Ken Butler’ that played right back and Captain of the great football team?
Hi Ken, I remember you well. Mayfield football team (the best) and Ilford
District team. Hope you are keeping well.
P.E. teacher 1961 – 1965 …. Please could you correct the spelling of Mr R. Savoury to SAVORY. Very many thanks. Does anyone remember him? (My father, who has sadly passed now.)
I remember him. A very professional and successful teacher, with a quiet and confident approach to teaching PE, who cared about all his pupils equally regardless of their sporting abilities, in contrast to some of the P.E teachers l later worked with in my career. As a second former l went on a ski trip by train to Switzerland and shared a sleeping compartment with Mr Savory, his wife and another pupil.
Very many thanks Andrew for taking the time to respond in such a lovely way to my post. You cannot imagine how much your memories and comments meant to me. Thank you again and I wish you and yours all the very best.
I too remember Mr Savory. An athletically muscular man, quiet, dignified and commanded respect. He stood out also as he commuted on a very small motor bike. He was very well liked.
Wonder what happened to our science master Mr Clarke?
I agree with the earlier description of Mr. Ivey. He also had the nickname of, “Bouncer” due to his habit of rocking back and forth on his feet when talking to the class.
Hi Sid, hope you are well. Some interesting stories on here, I remember Bouncer. What about Mr Pusey, looked like a young Fagin with those sunken eyes.
I remember Bouncer too, he was head of Park my forms whats a name. The worst experience of him was the classroom meeting for the Saturdays cross country run, SATURDAY!!! no fear. I managed to wriggle out of it. I also remember Mr Pusey kick starting his Brigtish racing green Bond Minicar 3 wheeler. Almost as much fun as watching Mr Norman Rimmel arriving on his ancient James motor bike. Happy days.
Who left Mayfield Boys school in 1975? Maybe we could have a reunion in 2025 for the 50th .. 😎
There was also a Mr. Rew, who took PE. I don’t know when he commenced or left the school but he was certainly there 1958-1959. He was built like a brick and was handy with the slipper.
