1958 Swimming Team

Swimming by Stan Frankland
The Swimming Team have continued to carry all before them. Our boys, for the fifth conseecutive time, were champions at the Secondary Schools’ Gala, Both our Senior and Junior Relay Teams won their races convincingly and gained trophies for their efforts.
For the third year running our under 15 Relay Team proved themselves to be the best in Essex and East Anglia. In the divisional final, held at Ilford, we won a most exciting race. After the first length it was obvious that it would be a very close thing as Chase Cross Secondary School from Romford and Mayfield were soon clear of the rest. I can still see young John Weidner, swimming second leg, overhauling the Chase Cross swimmer and giving his brother David a lead on the 3rd leg. David maintained the this lead for our last swimmer, Stuart Heathcote, to fight a tremendous battle with the Chase Cross No. 4.Stuart touched first and we were home. Our time in this race qualified us to swim, for the second year running, in the final of the A.S.A. Schoolboy Freestyle Team
Championship of England. This year the race was held at Brighton on Sept. 27th, 1958, six teams competing for the honour of being best school team in the country. We finished fifth in this race, and although we did not do as well as we had hoped, the result showed a very creditable performance by a young and light team. Each member of the team gave of his best. What more can one ask? Most of the team are eligible for selection next year. This augers well for the future. We offer our congratulations to the first team home, Bishop Gore School, Swansea, who were worthy winners.
Under 15 Relay Team from: Stuart Heathcote, David Weidner, David Short, John Weidner, Leslie Gurdon.
