1958/59 ISSA Hand Book
Many thanks to David Fifield for providing a copy of the Ilford Schools Sports Association Annual Handbook from which the following photos and information related to the Girls School have been extracted.
1959 Mayfield Girls Tennis Team
The Ilford Girls Schools Tennis Tournament was held on 11th July on the courts at the back of Egerton Gardens, Goodmayes. Each school entered two pairs, an ‘A’ pair and a ‘B’ pair. Each ‘A’ pair played every other ‘A’ pair and each ‘B’ pair likewise. Each match was of one long set duration. Two points were given for a win and the points of the two teams of each school were totalled. Mayfield Girls won the tournament with Beal Grammar the runners up. Sadly, the girls in the photograph are not named. Can you name them? – Ed

National Swimming Championships at Hornchurch. Congratulations to Mayfield Secondary Girls School in reaching the finals of the Individual Schools Relay Team Championship of England.
International Honours. Once again we have an Ilford scholar who has gained International Honours. We congratulate Pat Baines of Mayfield Secondary Girls School. Pat took part in the Great Britain Trials and was first in the 100 yards Butterfly event. She was then selected to swim for Great Britain against East Germany and other Internationals in 1959, and once again retained the 110 yards Junior Butterfly Championship of England.
1959 Mayfield Rally Winners (over 15 section)
There is no other information relating to this photo. I assume it refers to a Rounders competition. Miss K. M. Suttle of Mayfield County Secondary School is listed as Hon. Sec. Of the Rounders Section on the ISSA Committee. She is not currently listed as a teacher at Mayfield Girls School, does anyone remember her? Can you name any members of the team? – Ed.
