The Athletics Team did extremely well at the Secondary Schools’ Athletics Meeting as the first three positions indicate.
1st Gearies – 39 points
2nd Mayfield – 38 points
3rd Beal Grammar – 25 points
As one can gather it was a most interesting and exciting afternoon, and we congratulate Gearies on their succes. Our Field Events team gave a jolly good account of themselves and retained the cup awarded to the best school in that section. During the course of the season a number of records were broken. The most notable performance was that of Terry Macaree of 4A who gained first position in the Junior Boys Discus and the Weight at the Secondary Boys’ Meeting. Due to this outstanding performance he was selected to represent Ilford in the Esses County Athletics Meeting. He shattered the existing County Record for the Discus with a throw of 139ft. 8 inches. He was selected to represent Essex in the event at the National Championships. Unfortunately Terry did not produce his best form on the day and finished fifth with a throw of 130ft. 6 inches which was a good nine feet below his best. At our own School Meeting both Terry Macaree and Malcolm Irving broke the School Javelin Record with throws of 162ft. 4 inches and 149ft. 1 inch respectively. Ken Noden put up a target to reach in the High Jump, clearing 5ft. 2 1/2 inches. Tony Barrance set a standard in the Hop, Step and Jump, clearing 34ft. 2 inches.
