1958/59 Senior Football Team
From the Mayfield Magazine
Division One Football by Mr. S. Frankland
Of the three Mayfield School Football Teams our senior side was the most succesful. We finished 2nd in the League and reached the Semi-Final of the Gibson Cup.
The outstanding matches of the season? Many, too many to recount in the restricted space available, but it is certain that our Semi-Final Tie with Fairlop will not easily be forgotten. The match was played in pouring rain and on a heavy ground. It was one of those days when nothing went right! We were losing 2 – 1 when the lads went all out for the equaliser. The ball just would not go into the Fairlop net. For the last 20 minutes of the game the ball hardly left the Fairlop penalty area. Tony Barrance and his forwards played themselves into the ground to get that vital goal. They did at last get the ball into the net but it was ruled offside and Fairlop held on to win the game.
Considering that the majority of the team were third year boys, next season should see one of the finest football teams we have ever fielded. Team selected from: W. Fifield, F. Watts, K. Butler, D. Short, V. Hone, T. Macaree, M. Gregory, R. Bultitude, D. Brand, A. Barrance, M. Gibbons, M. Herbert, L. Gurdon, R. Stoddard.
The following boys played in the Ilford Schools’ Teams:
Under 15 – A. Barrance, T. Macaree.
Under 14 – K. Butler, D. Short, F. Watts, R. Bultitude, L. Gurdon.
I’d recognise my brother Bill Fifield any where, he is the goal keeper, top row third from left. He also played in goal for a team called ‘Hainult Rangers’. So lovely to see an old photo of him in his school days. He’s now living in America and is the only survivor (drummer) of the T.Rex group of the seventies. He was in the UK a few weeks ago and I know he would have loved to have seen this photo.
Just viewed this photograph and would love to hear from any of the ‘boys’.
