Members of the Mayfield Choir and Band in the quadrangle on Open Day
From the Mayfield Magazine, Music Notes by Mr. D. Shaw
The various music-making activities at Mayfield have made great strides during the year. The choir and band complemented by soloists have made their mark in the district and their outside concerts have been much appreciated.
During the year their have been many highlights; Speech Day with the first appearance of the band; the Easter Carol Service in All Saints Church; the party attended by over one hundred boys; The Schools’ Music Festival at the Town Hall; Open Day, when music in the quadrangle was a much appreciated item; and visits to the Salvation Army Old Folks Meeting and the Chadwell Christian Mission. The last two items illustrated the unselfishness of the boys concerned for they gave up their holiday time.
Musical activity is not confined to the above, for, in addition to the normal school lessons there are classes for Recorders under Mr. Larcombe, Piano under Mr. Robinson, Choir under Mr. Trewin, Violins under Mrs. Brockington and Brass under Mr. Talmage. All these classes are out of school hours and our appreciation is tendered to the leaders of classes who so enthusiastically give their time and energy.
We must not omit some mention of the assistance given by other members of the staff especially in connection with the Choir at the Carol services and the visits to hospitals. More ambitious choral activity is planned for this year. We would like to thank those kind friends who have lent us brass instruments. We now have some of our own, but we could not have done without them.
