MAYFIELD HAVE DONE IT AGAIN!
Two years ago I wrote of the magnificent performance of our Swimming team at Manchester when they won the Barker Shield. This year, at Bournemouth, they won again in record time. I will not say anything more about the race as you will find fuller particulars in the Sports Section, but I feel I must pay tribute to the man who made it possible. For over a month Mr. Frankland attended the Swimming Baths every morning before school, and I am sure I am right when I say that the team would be the first to admit that they would never have been successful without the enthusiasm and drive of Mr. Frankland. On behalf of the School I say ‘Thank You!’
From the Sports Section by Mr. S. C. Frankland
Apart from winning the Ilford Secondary Schools Swimming gala for the tenth year in succession, our swimming relay team won the Individual Schools Free Style team Championship of All England at Bournemouth. A tremendous achievement by Robert Easton, Bernard Smith, George Baines, David Braham and reserve John Gardiner. Not only did the team win convincingly but also lowered the previous record by 5 seconds, returning a new time of 2 mins 27.4 secs.
