Thanks to Melvin Jessop for submitting the picture of the 1968/69 Football Team. It brought back some great memories. One of my fondest memories of Mayfield was playing for the school football team, which was one of the best around at that time.
We were always the team to beat and had some great rivalries with other schools. I remember some great players like Barry Cramphorn, Alan Judd, John Georges, Melvin Jessop (one of the best keepers around), Bob King, and Bob Tilbury. We played some very attractive football and achieved a lot of success.
Looking at the pictures I realise how small I was in comparison to some of the other lads. I seemed to shoot up when I left school and am now 6 feet. Being part of the team was a real privilege and certainly gained you lots of brownie points with the rest of the lads. It also saved you from getting thumped too many times at the school gates after school. Mayfield was a tough school in many ways, but I would not have changed it for the world. Looking back I feel lucky to have gone there. It did me no harm and toughened me up for the real world. There was camaraderie and a sense of belonging and, as I was never one of the hard-nuts, I recall occasions outside the school when the lads stood up for me when I was threatened by kids from other schools. I will never forget that.
Hi Gerry
I have only just found this website. I seem to remember we were quite good friends. I recall Philip Dipper as also being one our friends. I ended up being Graeme Denny’s best man. I remember Barry Cramphorn and Alan Judd even from our days at Chadwell Heath Junior School. Two very good footballers. I seem to remember that you had a hard shot, is that right. Hope life has treated you well. I am married with three children living in Suffolk near Newmarket.
