I was a pupil at Mayfield from 1960 until 1964. I later worked for local newspapers as a reporter including a spell with the Ilford Recorder in the mid 1970s. It was here I wrote about my time at the school, and what inspired me to take the career path into journalism and broadcasting, in… Mayfield Memories (PDF file). Continue reading →

Ascending the stairwell in 1962/3 after a playground break, I was pulled aside by an officious prefect for talking – probably about homework. We were supposed to leave the playground and go to our classes without uttering a word. I thought he’d let me go when the other boys had passed by. On browsing through the site I recognised a number of names – Jill Stubbs, we were at South Park together, Trevor Lewis, Malcolm Bell, the late Peter Cawthorne, a friend of my older brother, and, of course, the teachers: Messrs Hicks – ‘the Beak’, Ivey, Bradley, Summers, Scott, Harvey, Saunders, Reeves – a lovely man, Rimmel – who left to become a solicitor, Jackson, Frankland, Fry, Cutting, et al. Some remembered fondly and others less so.

I don’t know If Glyn Summers will remember me, but when I first joined Mayfield he was my English teacher. In a moment of joviality, Glyn called me Dicky Bird (ha, ha). For the rest of my time at Mayfield everybody thought my real name was ‘Dick’, and my friends and school chums called me by this name well into my adult life. Continue reading →
