My dad went to Mayfield when it first opened, and he told me some tales about those early days. Mr. Cutting, who was fresh out of Teacher Training, put my dad in hospital playing rugby in the playground. He was being a bit flash running through the boys tackles, so they ganged up to get him, but my dad got floored and suffered a badly grazed face. Continue reading →

The visit by actor Victor Maddern to Mayfield in 1966
I had never seen an actor other than on television or the cinema screen. So to hear that one was going to talk to some of the school was very exciting. The venue was the library on the top floor of the school. Continue reading →

I was stunned to find this site and many happy memories flooded back. I started at Mayfield Boys in 1962, Form 1A1, with Mr. Wensley who was a Canadian exchange teacher. Then 2A1, 3X1 and 4E1 with Mr. Bradley and finally 5E1 with Mr. Ivey. Looking at the ‘1967 Prefects’ photo, which I do not remember being taken, I was amazed to see myself. I remember Richard Waugh but over the years I’ve lost contact with all of my old class mates. I remember Chris Hills, Roger Chapman, Graham Cubbidge and the late Richard Tideman amongst others. I do hope that many others stumble across this site and help to build the history of what was for me a very good school.

I left England in 1976 and settled in Vancouver WA U.S.A. which is near where my wife was born. I am retired and enjoying a lot of travelling. I especially enjoyed a recent trip back to London as I was able to bring my eldest Granddaughter back home to show her the old country. Continue reading →
