When I left school in 1953, I joined the staff at Arsenal Football Club. In 1961 I moved to Southend United and in 1962 to Ipswich Town, ending my playing career at Gravesend and Northfleet. I then trained as a BT engineer and in 1983 moved to Australia.

What memories these names bring back; Tony Gocke, Mike Wiseman, Roy Goulden, Eric Winters to name but a few. I don’t suppose they’ll remember me as I was pretty quiet by nature. My best mate at Mayfield was Malcolm Charman. Our last year was in Stan Franklands class, which was great. This was in coronation year and each class had a secret ballot for two pupils to go up to the embankment see see this momentous event. Don’t ask me how, but Malcolm and I came out top and duly went to see the coronation. I think Mr. Frankland fixed it. Continue reading →
1953 Tony Burrow R.I.P.
Tony Burrow (1937-2012) – I was shocked when I read the post by Lynn Wright (nee Aldridge) on Mayfield’s Face Book page on November 10, 2012: ‘It is with sadness that I have to report my Uncle Tony Burrow passed away this week, he attended Mayfield Boys School’. Continue reading →

1954 Keith Corse R.I.P.
My brother, Keith, attended Mayfield from 1950 to 1954. He was quite a character and was in the school boxing team. Keith died in November 2006 from cancer and he is much missed by all who knew him.

1954 Robert Towler R.I.P.
Robert Towler (1938-2004) – My father joined the Royal Navy after leaving school, then subsequently the merchant navy and the fire brigade, serving in London. He also spent many years working in Harrods as a fireman. He married twice, and had 3 children, myself and 2 sons Christopher and Stephen, and up to his sudden death, still lived locally in Chadwell Heath.

1955 Allan Shrimpton R.I.P.
My dad sadly passed away in 2013 and is so greatly missed. I would love to hear from anyone who knew him at Mayfield. I know he was a good footballer and, apparently, had a trial for West Ham.

1955 Bill Cross
I have visited visited Mayfield Memories on many occasions but have always held back from participating. Whilst I have many happy memories of my time at Mayfield, 1951/55, it can only be described as undistinguished. In fact my only mention in the Mayfield Magazine relates to the 1952/53 football season junior team results, where my name is spelled ‘Gross’. Which, I think, says it all.

Schooldays
Mr. Bennett was principally a geography teacher though I was lucky to get him as a form master for my 1st and 2nd years. I remember that he used to keep a size 13 slipper in his desk drawer, with which he dispensed justice and kept good order. He was an avid rugby fan and I once met him on a tube train after a Wales v England match, by which time I was in the Merchant Navy, and we had a quick chat. Continue reading →
