Form 5E Projects: At the back end of the 1954/55 school year I’d completed the cutting and polishing of the eight ply veneered occasional table top. In the Metalwork Room photo I’m at the back, brazing fixing plates onto the bent metal legs. Continue reading →
1956 Malcolm (Mac) Miller
Mayfield’s web site has stirred up so many memories for me. My first visit to the school was to watch my elder sister, Audrey, perform in a stage play in 1949. I joined the school in 1952 and the girls were still there. I can recall the boys snowballing them over a small picket fence as they came in the main gates. Continue reading →
1956 Martyn Denne R.I.P.
Martyn Denne (1941-2006) – Martyn was my twin brother and he left Mayfield the same year as me, 1956. He was a regular soldier then, when he left the Army, he became a Bus Driver. He lived in Laindon, Essex.

1956 Peter Samways
I lived in Somerville Road and used to walk along Eastern Avenue and wait for my friend Robin Warren, then walk to the Hawbush to catch the 62 bus to school. Some other names I can remember are Eric Dance, Ronald Schenieder and Michael Johnson. Pat and Margaret Seal lived near me in Somerville Road. If we could only go back in time, I had a very happy life at Mayfield and William Torbitt, those were the days. I left Mayfield School in 1956 and moved to Eastbourne.
1956 Terry Thompson R.I.P.
Terry Thompson (1941-2008) – Terry sadly passed away last weekend after a long, determined and brave fight. The second eldest of nine brothers and sisters who all attended either Mayfield boys or girls school, which covered a span from the fifties into the early seventies. Terry leaves behind a loving and caring wife, Carol, two sons, a daughter and a small mountain of grandchildren. The latter being one of the reasons that kept him going so long. Terry will be deeply missed but not forgotten. Funeral to be held in Carlisle where he lived for many years in and around the Lake District, Cumbria.

It is so pleasant to note that my opinions of my old school are shared by others, and not just me looking at my past through rose-colored spectacles. I was privileged to attend Mayfield school after failing the dreaded eleven plus examination. Like many other children in the post war years the stigma of not being a ‘grammar school boy’ was huge and tended to reduce ones own expectations in particular, and those of society in general, of an individual emanating from a Secondary Modern education. Mayfield and its teaching staff prepared me for the career that I aspired to and still enjoy. Continue reading →
1958 Barry Eaton
I attended Mayfield from 1953 to 1958. My last form master was Mr Scot and our form room was one of the labs on the first floor. Reading all the other blogs and looking at the photos has certainly brought back memories. I was on the 1957 Danbury Camp trip, I remember we cycled to the camp site. Whilst there another camper and I had to be taken to hospital, I think it was by Mr Beaumont, as we had both injured our arms in separate incidents and both ended up in plaster. In the photograph I am second from the right in the middle row and my plastered left arm can be seen. Continue reading →
