1960 Cherrie Lawrence
We had some cracking times at school and plenty of laughs. It was a great school and we had some really dedicated teachers. In those days (1956/60) we would get free milk, and I was one of the milk monitors along with my friend Vickie Gibbins. During the winter a lot of the kids didn’t drink the milk, so Vickie and I had a few extra. Continue reading →

1961 Arlyne Meyers R.I.P.
Arlyne Brogan (nee Meyers) (1945-2009) – Arlyne came to my class at Mayfield Girls in 1960. I remember her beautiful handwriting and excellence at Maths. We were friends straight away, along with Joy Clayton (nee Clementts), and we spent many Sunday afternoons at her house in Green Lanes with her 2 brothers and 4 sisters. My lasting memory of our schooldays is sitting in the playground at lunchtime listening to her sing the Everley Brothers hit ‘Cathy’s Clown’. We stayed friends via letter when I went to N.Z. for 4 years, and after I returned. Arlyne worked in the laboratories at Ilford Ltd, and then as a nurse for Tate and Lyle. My daughters and I often visited her and her daughter Therese and both attended my surprise 50th birthday party. Sadly Arlyne died in 2009 and is missed by friends and family.

1961 Ros Mickleburgh
I was at Mayfield from 1956 to 1961 and the photo below was taken in year 4 or 5 when I was known as Rosalie. I remember Miss Tappenden, Miss Rayward, Mrs. Mendem, Miss Strachan (pronounced, as she kept telling us, Strawn), and Audrey Nicholson. She was very special, and her influence has led my career in the theatrical direction. Continue reading →
1961 Sandra Patel R.I.P.
Sandra Eiffert (nee Patel) (1943-2008) – I first met Sandra when she lived next door to my classmate, Arlyne Meyers, in Green Lane in 1960. Many years later I was in Ilford Maternity Hospital having my second daughter and Sandra was in the next bed to me with her daughter, Ayesha. Forward 5 years and I took my youngest daughter Sarah for her first day of school to Christchurch School in Ilford and there, starting in the same class, was Ayesha. I kept in touch with Sandra until the girls left school, but when I tried to find her in 2009 I was told that Sandra had died the year before. Moral of this story – don’t put off looking for someone, in case you are too late.
