Miss Nicholson’s dedication and kindness live on in my memory. She was the wonderfully caring teacher at Erkenwald School who instilled in me a deep love of Shakespeare’s ‘Julius Caesar’ and gave me true insight into the text. Her love of science fiction also stirred something deep in me.
I owe her a great deal. Her faith in me, her insistence – much to my childish annoyance at the time – on sending work home during my long illness and her refusal to accept anything other than my very best work enabled this intrinsically lazy boy to become a teacher, teacher-trainer and published author. The love of the written and spoken word which she gave me was a priceless gift. Thanks for everything, Miss. I wish I’d had the courtesy to thank you properly at the time.
