Questions and Answers
From our time at Mayfield
To Sir, With Love
Jenny Crook asked: My father, Richard Reeves, was a metalwork teacher at Mayfield from 1951 to about 1976. I seem to remember he told me as a teenager that E. R. Braithwaite taught at Mayfield briefly and used the experience in writing his book ‘To sir, With Love’. Is this true?

The Bartered Bride
Jacki Terry asked: Around 1964 the boys and girls schools combined to produce an operetta, ‘The Bartered Bride’. The chorus was pupils, the leads were teachers, and the orchestra was made up of participants in the music programs from both schools. Led by Doug Shaw, it was lots of fun. I was in the orchestra, and I remember that later on Doug organised a music school which I attended for a while. Does anyone else remember this?
The School Houses
Malcolm Staight asked: Does anyone have any ideas about how the House names came about? I remember my dad telling me that he was a member of Wood House during his time at Mayfield. He started at the school when it first opened so the Houses; Brook, Field, Park and Wood, must have been in place from day one.
The Tape Recorder Club
Roy Tyzack asked: Does anyone remember the ‘Tape Recorder Club’? It was run by Glyn Summers, probably around 1962/3 and we used to meet, after school, in the library. The idea was to act out plays and record them on the large tape recorder owned by the school. I don’t think it was terribly successful (probably just terrible!). I remember, in one play, it required one of us to sing ‘Shenandoah’. I volunteered and gave it my best shot but I seem to remember, having listened to my efforts, that Glyn decided the play would survive without the ‘vocal refrain’! I would love to hear from anyone who remembers that club.
Mayfield Youth Club
Jacki Terry asked: Do you remember the Mayfield Youth Club?

Alan Thompson asked: Does anyone remember the House Drama Competitions? I was in one for Wood House playing the part of Kysh, the cockney manservant, in a short story called ‘Shivering Shocks’.
The School Uniform
David Cole asked: How did the school uniform change over the years the schools were open, and have the boys and girls school always had the same uniform?
